BAPTISM

The example of baptism:
Jesus was baptized (Matthew 3:13, 16-17)
Jesus taught baptism (Matthew 28:18-20)
We see it in the early church (Acts 2:41, 8:13 34-38, 10:48, 16:30-34)

The need for baptism:
Sin entered the world (Genesis 3:6-7)
Separation happened because of sin (Isaiah 59:2)
An Old Testament sacrificial system was put in place (Leviticus 16:30)
A New and better covenant came (Hebrews 10:1, 4, 11-12)
Jesus puts us back in right standing with God (II Corinthians 5:21)
Only Jesus can do that (John 14:6)

What baptism reflects:
A pledge from you to God (I Peter 3:18,21)

What baptism does:
Clothes us with him (Romans 6:1-11)

Baptism symbolizes Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection. He went to the cross for us. Died for our sins. Was placed in a tomb. 3 days later, he walked out. He conquered death. He conquered sin. Jesus’ resurrection provides salvation for believers.
When we are baptized into Christ, our baptism reflects Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection while also serving as our own death, burial and resurrection.
We are dying to self.
Our old self dies, is buried (under water) and our new self, in Christ, rises (out of the water).

At Science Hill Christian we do not believe we can point to the precise moment someone becomes saved.
Is it the moment a person feels conviction?
Is it the moment someone repents of that conviction?
Is it the moment someone confesses their belief in Jesus?
Is it the moment someones decides to become baptized?
Is it when they are under the water?
Is it when they are raised up from the water?
We, at SHCC, simply cannot answer that question.
But we do know this, we all sin.
We all need a Savior.
And that Savior is named Jesus.

So we teach. People hear the Word of God. People examine their life based on the Word of God. People recognize sin in their life. People recognize a need for a Savior. People confess their belief in Jesus. People repent of their sin. People are baptized in Christ. People are saved and added to the kingdom.

And all of that is needed.
